Hello, I’m Benett, and this is my portfolio. Most of the work here is student
work I made while earning my BA in Fine Art at USC from 2011 - 2014.
I was born, raised, and currently reside in Los Angeles. My early background
in art proudly began as a love affair with musical theater performing in such
stage productions as Annie, Sound of Music, and Grease. I could sing the
entire Sondhiem song book by age 11. That may or may not be exaggeration…
As a natural progression, I nestled into punk rock and started my first band Charles Brown Superstar at 17. We were an art-rock band with a double LP,
a bright future, and a lot of ideals. I continued to write and record albums
under Benett until 2001. During that period, I was also working as a wardrobe assistant mainly on commercials, but also in other areas including print and film.
In 2007, I made the decision to go back to school and focus on design and psychology. I find both really fascinating and entirely entwined. In the end, I found myself studying fine art with an emphasis in photography at USC.
The photos in my portfolio include a mix of film, digital, and flatbed scanner work. Because I work rather intuitively, and somewhat impulsively, I tend to favor the scanner. I like using photography to bring life to, and explore the stillness of inanimate objects. The very human ability, or necessity, to project emotion and life onto non-living objects is really exciting to me. It says so much about our curiosity and our need to connect. I like to play with materials. I like to connect.
